And I got it made in the shade

I think quite a bit probably is.

There are lots and lots of copies. Make sure to read descriptions and check out sellers' feedback. If it's a high ticket item, ask for a certificate of authenticity from a verifiable source.

I personally would advice against autographed paraphernalia for sale online. There are so many ways to get duped and photocopied/forged photos are one of the biggest ones. Your best bet in making sure it's legitimate is to get the real thing by the real person.

When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade.

Well there are legitimate autograph brokers out there. Granted there are lots of phonies, but the autograph memorabilia scene is a big one, and there are experts who can authenticate this stuff.

Take a look at this seller & feedback:

www.flatsigned.com

From the feedback you would assume this to be a reputable dealer.

Curiously, the posts regarding the continuing saga of "flatsigned" have mostly been removed from Google's archive of rec.collecting.books, save for one thread dealing with an H.P. Lovecraft book which was signed posthumously. There were literally hundreds of such incidents discussed there and he is regarded with contempt by the group. Most of the group consists of booksellers who have called him out numerous times for offering fake autographs. The conundrums range from editions signed after the author's death, to booksellers who were present at the shows where the signature was supposedly acquired, but the authors were not.

Autograph collecting on eBay is an uncertain endeavor.

Could be, but 99.7% out of 17,714 transactions of signed books is outstanding... not to mention the negatives they do have mention nothing at all about fake signatures (most cite slow or overpriced shipping or an item not in stock).

Not saying they never did anything wrong, but if I was looking for a signed book I wouldn't hesitate to buy from that seller considering their reputation that I can see.

Yes, he's very good at what he does. Except when facts trip him up.

Perception is reality.

I have no first-hand knowledge of dealing with him. I'm only relating what I understand from people I respect who are more knowledgeable than I am. I submit it as an example, not to warn people off. Far be it from me to be a killjoy.
