You gotta be real careful on this stuff. A lot of it is fake. And sometimes the people selling it believe it to be the real mcCoy, but it's not. Even when faced with the truth it's human nature to deny it. That being said, autographs and signed memorabilia are popular collectibles. I'd say, become an expert in the area you want to collect, and get to know the respected sellers and experts out there. Even then though, it's buyer beware!

Take the time to check the feedback of a member. Do they sell other autographed items? What kind of price do their items fetch?

Example; I was looking to buy a signed Nirvana LP. There were several for sale. I investigated the feedback of several sellers. One in particular had over 300 feedback with a 100% positive score, he sold nothing but autographed items, and his auctions brought in 300-400% more than his competitors' auctions. Furthermore, there were many repeat buyers.

That's a pretty good sign. Sure, it's not bulletproof, but it's another thing to consider when shopping. It doesn't hurt to become an expert in the field either, although even experts can be fooled

If you buy something like that do you get it authenticated?

Sometimes I do. It depends on how important the item is to me, the price of the item, and/or if I suspect it to be a fake.

Spouting off numbers in a case such as this is only a guess. It could be 60% (which even then would be a LOT).

I'm with you that a lot are fake, maybe even most are fake. But If I see someone that only sells autographed items, runs an auction house, and has repeat, high-end customers, has been selling for 5 years +, odds are their items are legit.

Furthermore, many autographed items aren't worth much. I met Sandra Bullock and had her sign a magazine that she was in. I look online and the going rate is .99c. Only big time autographs on important, relic type items fetch a major price, and those draw big time buyers that know what they're doing. If someone can run a business like that with experts buying from them over the course of several years, that's pretty solid.
