This happened about three weeks ago.
The bees were right on the driveway in a circular swarm from size of a dinner plate up to about 20" inches. This went on for three days, with bees hovering about the swarm... coming and going. The swarm moved about six feet after two days.

First neighbor to notice swarm put up a big cardboard box with a red warning sign.

When the house owner showed up he killed the bees. Guess he had to do it to protect himself, his wife and dog.

Never saw a swarm on the ground before, very strange.

RE: Where have all the honeybees gone?

I've got these black wood-boring bees, they are big, like bumblebees and intimidating, but I don't think they sting. I blasted the area by the roofline with pest-killer where they have been buzzing about. satisfied:

RE: Where have all the honeybees gone?

I think I saw a bumblebee, but yeah this honeybee story is disturbing...
http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/americas/04/22/vanishing.bees.reut/index.html

RE: Where have all the honeybees gone?

I live in the Deep South, and Come tothink of it Our azeleas I have only seen Bumble bees...Blue bells...No honey bees either???
