I sold an iPhone to somebody in Spain and the iPhone ended up being faulty. He let me know by filing a paypal claim, and he would like to return for a refund. I don't have a problem with this. He would like a refund before he ships it to me, this I am not crazy about. I would like to refund after I receive this, which he is not crazy about.
I know there is a way to set this up in paypal. Can I escalate it to a dispute, and then agree to refund after it is return, where he will be prompted to enter a tracking number? Is this recommended?
Unfortunately this sale occurred 45 days ago so it looks like I'm going to be out on my paypal fees...

If you're the seller, you don't file any dispute. You can just inform the buyer that you will issue the refund once you have product in hand. Let him file the claim and when that happens, paypal will require that he prove return delivery (provided he even qualifies for buyer protection). You can let paypal know that you have no problem issuing a refund but not without product in hand.
I personally would never do a refund without having return product in hand, especially on international orders.
As for the implications with paypal stipulations and international orders, I'm not very experienced in that area. I would imagine that all of the same stipulations would apply as do with domestic orders (i.e. confirmed address, filing within time lines, proof of delivery, etc.)
My advice would be to expect delivery of a return before issuing any refund. I don't know of any business that would give a refund on a product just on the word that the customer could take money now, and come back later to bring in the return.
If the item is low in value and you're trying to avoid a negative issue the refund. An iphone seems like it would be a high ticket item, and as such (and being that there is such demand domestically), should only be sold domestically.

| I know it's a little late since your original post, but you should also make sure the phone you get back is the same as the one you sent out. There are scams where people will buy a replacement item for a broken one they already own, only to return the broken one for a refund.
