I just finished reading the book (and also watching the DVD) of "The Secret." Oprah has been pushing it, and the rapper Diddy (among many others) says he's used it to achieve business success. So what do you think?

Shhh....wanna know the secret? It's the "law of attraction." Essentially the author makes the case that you get from the universe what you ask of it (consciously or not). If while on the way to an appointment you say, "I know I'll hit traffic, I always hit traffic," well then the universe gives you a traffic jam. If you focus each day on making successful sales, then the universe sees to it that people buy. It's a bit new-agey, but lots of successful people swear by it.

| The author wrapped up a bunch of stuff from writers over the past hundred years, as well as recent gurus...but still it's pretty inspirational.

I cannot imagine how things could be otherwise.
Whatever you put your attention to grows. What you avoid, ignore or give not attention to diminishes.
Well, nearly everything. Can't ignore a cop flashing his lights at you.
But, you can put a positive spin on the whole affair by leaving the possibility open his delaying you keep you out of a horrid pile up on down the road.

I've got a better idea, it's my book called, "Messing With The Man" that is in print as we speak. Chock full of good stuff like ebay scams, beating traffic tickets by contesting them in jury trials, saving money on your car insurance without switching to Geico, the list goes on
About, "The Secret"; I don't know much about it, but appears to be along the lines of conditioning perspective. If I'm wrong then pardon me, but my take on that is that many things changing for the better are due to the observer's interpretation of the subject in question. I don't believe for example, that if I will there to be no traffic on the way to work, that I actually have some kind of power to make that happen. I can however, condition myself to have a positive outlook to whatever situation I find when I get on that road.
""I know I'll hit traffic, I always hit traffic," well then the universe gives you a traffic jam. If you focus each day on making successful sales, then the universe sees to it that people buy. It's a bit new-agey, but lots of successful people swear by it. "
Hey Huck!
This is an interesting concept and gets into the whole free will type thing. If the universe is giving me a traffic jam, then the people involved in that jam are all going to have to be people that thought like I did... i.e. thought they would hit traffic. If someone was exploiting some unseen power of the universe to avoid traffic, then they couldn't be involved in the the jam!
But what happens when the guy sitting next to me on my way to work is practicing the secret and I'm not? Or perhaps decides to miss traffic when he sets out for work at 8:30 but at 8:45 someone else starts off kind of late and in their negative haste, on the same route, insists that they'll hit traffic?
The only way that could work is if you were of the perspective that every thing, and every person in the universe was just a figment of your imagination that all revolved around your perspective, awareness, and were all under your control. Because we see so many people suffering through no fault of their own (the dying cancer patient that believes in a miracle healing, the Kenyan prostitute trying to save money while being defiled in back allies just so she can take her kids to a better place, the wrongly accused prisoner on death row, etc.), we can see that there are conflicting perspectives and our will and at times, our perspectives are not enough to win out.
Are the successful people that swear by it successful before or after? I'm willing to bet Oprah or P. Diddy found it after they established their careers and made millions!

Oh, I thought the world rotated on my axis!
Guess I'll have to wait til I'm a gazillionaire to establish that.
I actually do believe we are all like drops in the great sea. If each and all at the same moment were to be pure and positive, WOW, rapture! Imagine.
Reality is likely more this. We go along, do our best, treat each other well and the universal forces will favor what works. Enjoy the ride with, or without a seatbelt. Expect nothing, be in awe of it all.

There's a devo song called, "Turnaround". Here's a link;
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJFndSJVSYA
"take a step outside the planet
you turn around and round
now take a look at where you are
it's pretty scary"
I feel that to be a pretty accurate description of our situation
